Hellen van Meene

I am extremely centered around light and light sources. That's a huge reason why I picked this next photographer. Her use of light is just insane and beautiful. I love natural and delicate light and thats what she uses. Hellen van Meene is a portrait photographer from the Netherlands who studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Most of her portrait images are of young girls. She is  known for her exceptional use of light and the sometimes awkward yet fragile poses. She works with girls that have no experience being a model and guides them in how they need to pose. She only uses natural light in order to keep her models the main focus of the photographs. It way to common for photographers to try to blow out pictures with so much light and enhancement that it distracts viewers. Sometimes all the distractions make you feel disconnected with the piece. Hellen wanted to keep it simple and make sure the focus of her pictures are the subjects and the issues surrounding being a young innocent girl.
