My next photographer is Matt Stuart. Matt didn't go to school for photography, he actually learned it by being an assistant to a photographer. Matt is a street photographer that spends his days out on the street waiting to capture that perfect moment. The cool thing about street photography is it's unexpected. You never know exactly what you are going to walk away with. Some days you might leave with a couple hundred images or you might walk away with none. It just really depends on the day, location and the people around you. There are two huge reasons I love Matt Stuart. One reason is because he still uses film! Yes I said film as in not digital... you know those rolls you have to process and use an enlarger to print! The other reason I like him is because he never manipulates his images unless he has been hired to do so. For his own art purposes he doesn't manipulate the images he shoots. He mostly just focuses on shooting and capturing "moments." He finds these moments by wandering the streets of London. Stuart looks for moments where all things fall into place to make a shot. His work is really spontaneous and has a humorous quality to it. When he started doing photography about 14 years ago he decided that staging images weren't for him. The more you edit the more you loose the raw emotion of the photograph.
I really liked his advice for fellow street photographers... "Buy a good pair of comfortable shoes, have a camera around your neck at all times, keep your elbows in, be patient, optimistic and don’t forget to smile."
